The game begins in Afghanistan,
where U.S. Army Ranger Private First Class Joseph Allen
helps in the taking of a city from insurgents.
Impressed by Allen's combat abilities,
Lieutenant General Shepherd recruits him into Task Force 141,
 an elite, multi-national counter-terrorism unit under Shepherd's command.
 Meanwhile, two other members of Task Force 141, Captain John "Soap" MacTavish and Sergeant Gary "Roach" Sanderson,
 scale a mountain of the Tian Shan to infiltrate an airbase in Kazakhstan
 to recover a lost ACS module from a downed satellite.
 Allen is later sent on an undercover mission
 in Russia for the CIA under the alias of "Alexei Borodin."

The game begins when Sergeant "Soap" MacTavish
 is beginning his career with the British SAS at a training camp in Hereford, England.
 Soap, Captain Price, "Gaz", and several SAS members then attempt to find
 a nuclear device on board a cargo ship in the Bering Sea.
 As they clear the quarters and kill the Russian soldiers aboard,
 the ship is attacked and begins to sink.
 The team quickly escapes with the cargo manifest,
 which provides evidence of ties between the Russian
Ultranationalist Party and a rebel faction in the Middle East.

The game begins in Makin Island at night on August 17, 1942.
Private Miller watches the torture and execution of a fellow soldier by the Japanese.
Miller is rescued by a rescue squad, led by Corporal Roebuck and Sergeant Sullivan just as they assault the island,
 replicating the Makin Island raid. The following mission then starts two years later
 at the beginning of the Battle of Peleliu.
 After breaking through the Japanese lines on the Peleliu beach,
 Miller destroys three Ha-Gō tanks with rocket strikes, allowing their tanks to advance.
At the end of the mission, Sergeant Sullivan is killed by a Japanese soldier wielding a katana.
 Roebuck, now promoted to Sergeant, and his squad make their way through the Peleliu swamps
 to launch an assault on a Japanese held airfield to disable anti-aircraft guns.
 During the assault, Miller acquires a flamethrower,
 a Rifle Grenad launcher and bazooka.
